{"id":173,"date":"2011-01-05T18:36:45","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T18:36:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.department99.com\/bobamter\/?page_id=173"},"modified":"2014-08-26T12:22:26","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T12:22:26","slug":"case-study-drexel-industries-inc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bobamter.com\/?page_id=173","title":{"rendered":"Case Study: Drexel Industries Inc."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>Drexel Industries Inc., <\/em><\/h2>\n<h2><em>Pennsylvania and Jones Plumbing Systems Inc., Alabama<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Robert Amter was simultaneously retained, by two clients as turnaround Chief Executive Officer of two distressed manufacturing companies.<\/p>\n<p>Drexel Industries and Jones Plumbing were owned by General Electric Capital and The Jordan Company respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Drexel Industries Inc.<\/em><\/strong><em>, Horsham, Pennsylvania<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Drexel was a $20 million in sales manufacturer of very narrow aisle fork lift trucks primarily sold through material handling dealers.\u00a0 About ten percent of sales are directly to the government, principally the military.\u00a0 General Electric Capital Corp. acquired Drexel in April 1994.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problems:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00bb Incurred a $1.1 million net loss in fiscal year 1995.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00bb 41% of Drexel\u2019s customers had not purchased a fork lift\u00a0 truck in the first six months of 1995.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00bb Market share had declined every year since 1990.\u00a0 In 1986, it was 36% and 21% in 1995.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00bb Inventory had increased 20% from March 1995 through June 1995. From $4.0 million to $4.8 million while truck shipments were flat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00bb In 1993, Drexel was awarded a $6.4 million U.S. Army contract (TACOM) for delivery in 1995.\u00a0 By 1994, the company had failed the Army\u2019s Aberdeen performance test.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Drexel was in default of the Army contract and faced large punitive monetary damages which may force the company into bankruptcy and potentially liquidation.
